A DS3 is a 45 mbps (megabits per second) circuit. DS3 is also referred to as a T3. A T3/DS3 is the equivalent of 28 DS1s (commonly referred to as T1s). Each DS1 is comprised of 24 DS0s (also referred to as channels). (For more about channelized DS3 please click here)

A DS0 is a 64 kbps (kilobits per second) circuit. Each DS0 can be configured to carry voice or data traffic. When the DSOs of a single DS1 or DS3 are specifically configured and combined to provide different functions such as voice, internet data, video conferencing, audio conferencing or video broadcasting, this is referred to as channelization. A channelized DS3 can perform all of the above functions, and more, without the added expense of needing to combine T1s for each function, or needing to acquire separate DS3s or fractional DS3s for each function. Because a DS0 is a very small component of a DS3, channel assignments can be extremely granular and specialized. DS0s within a DS3 can be combined in any number to allow extremely precise function assignments. Channelization makes DS3 an extremely versatile and adaptable service. With the arrival of MPLS (multiprotocol label switching) technology, channelized DS3s can now be combined to network any of the above functions for any number of locations nationwide, or world wide. As an example, portions of channelized DS3, can be allocated for any-to-any video conferencing between corporate offices simultaneously nationwide. (Click here to return to top of page)

 T3 or DS3?

Written by: Dennis Green - May 15, 2008

In the context of telecommunications, the terms T3 and DS3 are often used synonymously to describe a 45 mbps (megabits per second) circuit. A T3/DS3 is the equivalent of 28 T1s. People who are more technically inclined will often refer to DS3 when they are talking about the configuration of the circuit, and T3 if they are referring to the physical connection which carries the circuit. Most people, however, use both terms interchangeably. T3/DS3 is used for carrying both voice (in the form of data) and data traffic. T3/DS3 is commonly used for larger point-to-point circuits, MPLS (multiprotocol label switching), Virtual Private Networks (VPN), internet traffic, call centers, and videoconferencing.
